Help Me: Fund my Cornell Summer College Experience

Fund my Cornell Summer College Experience

What I'm Fundraising For

I'm fundraising to attend Cornell University's 6-week Summer Program. Its a Dual-Program, meaning I'd be taking 2 college classes for college credits. I will be taking Introduction to Political Philosophy and a "Body, Mind, and Health" class that investigates how diseases affect the body with a focus on Tuberculosis, Anorexia Nervosa, and AIDS. I have thought about studying Political Science in college so the intro class will help me gain more experience in that area of study. The medical class intrigues me because I was diagnosed with Latent Tuberculosis this past year; so I would like to learn more about my illness and how its affecting my body.

Why This Is Important To Me:

Being admitted to NYU and Cornell's Precollege was a blessing. After the tough fight with latent tuberculosis and other infections of my lungs, I felt like I fell behind. I missed auditions for clubs I really wanted to join, a third of my soccer season, a football game given in my friend's honor and was confined to my house for days. Despite it, I brought my grades up, got straight A's, and gained back hope. Since, I've been learning about my passions, learning the value of life, started speaking out for the causes I believe in, and continued volunteering. Earlier this year, I received brochures in the mail for Cornell's Precollege Summer Program. As soon as I saw them, I had to apply. For weeks I prepared the application supplements and read about the classes. Some of the classes offered study in my areas of interest like psychology, sociology, and history. Most of these classes investigate New York, the cultural and economic oasis of the US and the world's stage where issues have been protested and questioned. Being a college bound student in the heart of New York city or at a prestigious Ivy League is an incredible opportunity where I will learn about professions I'm interested in, earn college credit, and allow me to get ahead after falling behind.

How I Will Use The Funds:

The funds raised will be used primarily to pay for the costs of classes and a residential dorm on campus. The total cost is about $12,000 (including room and board); however, I applied for the scholarship through the Joyce Ivy Foundation and I was awarded about $4,000 and through Cornell I was awarded $3,000. I also got a job to help pay the cost and hopefully, this brings my cost down to $5,000. The extra $1000 would be used for travel expenses to Ithaca and a laptop. If you choose not to or are not able to donate, please share my story and help me make Cornell a reality! All contributions, big or small are greatly appreciated!
