Help Me: Tuition to Study in Costa Rica
Study Abroad
What I'm Fundraising For
I will be attending Long Island University's Global program in the fall of 2017. I have pushed myself throughout my academic career to be accepted into this small group of students who will be studying abroad. My first year I will be studying in Costa Rica and living with a host family. While I was awarded a scholarship, it only covers 1/3 of tuition.
Why This Is Important To Me:
I have pushed myself throughout my high school career to achieve my highest goals: high honor roll, AP Scholar, award-winning student journalist. As a journalist, I focused my first printed work on the struggling English-language learner program in my school district. While doing research, I met two young refugees, Jose and Miguel. These two boys opened my eyes to a world beyond my own privilege. By interviewing these students and others who had immigrated to Tennessee, I was able to learn about the struggles of being an outsider. I learned the everyday struggles these students encountered and how they pushed themselves to overcome. This one article shaped my plans for the future. I want to be able to work to ensure that no other students have to struggle in school because of a language barrier. I want to work to protect members of the community that are silenced and disenfranchised. Being able to study abroad will give me the ability to understand the issues refugees and immigrants face in their native countries, and I will study world cultures to help create a safe environment in the United States that will protect these cultures and people of the world who now call America home.
How I Will Use The Funds:
I will use these funds to pay for a portion of my tuition. I am working part-time while in school to save for living expenses. I will also be taking out student loans, but any donations would help lessen the potential debt from student loans.
