I have been though much more than an average 17 year old. Being a first generation immigrant I have moved and studied in two counties, three states and countless schools. My parents work twelve hours shifts seven days a week to make ends meet. I also have a special needs sister. Instead of felling pity for myself, I reflect upon my experiences and realize how incredibly lucky I am. I have parents who are constantly sacrificing for myself and have been provided an opportunity for a better future and chance to be successful. I draw upon a famous quote by Booker T. Washington, "Success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life as by the obstacles he has overcome." This has inspired me to strive for excellence and not allow my hardships to serve as excuses for failure. This has changed my perspective and allowed me to become positive and optimistic with a bright outlook into the future. I am a Student Mentor and Assistant Manager at a local Subway Restaurant. Unlike most students, I have worked every day over the summer excluding two days at eight to twelve hour shifts each. I have applied this dedication to volunteering which is my passion, (helping others in any manner I can) and volunteer 7 hours on a weekly basis (average). I am avidly involved in Student Council as well being awarded Student Council Star and nominated Delegate. Volunteering is something that unites everyone that is willing to sacrifice their time and efforts to help others. With great pleasure, I have been able to volunteer over 200 hours. read more
