Alt Break to India

At the end of May, I will be traveling to India with the Alternative Break program at American University, where my group and I will be working at a summer camp for youth, specifically Dalits. Literally meaning “of the dust,” the Dalits, also known as the Untouchables, do not have access to education, the workforce, and the other castes. This discrimination based on the caste system has spread beyond Hinduism and into the social structure of India overall. As MLK Jr once said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” I believe that we all need each other, and that everyone who comes into our lives, for however short or long a time is meant to teach us something. Even though I do not have the money, I feel like God is leading me to go Tamil Nadu. Accordingly, I would appreciate anything you might be willing to give, even if it is just 5$. Thank you so much for the support, and God bless!

Mission trip to NYC!

According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, there are 1,750,000 individuals in the United States without homes. There are 31,000,000 people who live in hunger or on the edge of hunger. In New York City alone, there are approximately 6,252 families who are staying in city shelters nightly, and 20% of the people in an average soup kitchen line are children. These statistics are overwhelming, and the realities they represent are even more devastating. But the Dream Center in New York City is doing something to change that. During my spring break this semester (March 10-16), I will be traveling to New York City with Chi Alpha, the on-campus Christian Ministry group I am involved in. We will be volunteering with the Dream Center, a ministry that reaches the inner city of New York. As a team, we'll be doing work in the surrounding neighborhoods, such as cleaning apartments, painting buildings, preparing and handing out meals, canvassing for the church, as well as helping with other projects. We also partner with another church and help with their youth ministry. Although it will be hard work and a financial challenge, I am really eager to see the work that God will do during this time. And as I prepare for this trip, I really am learning that it’s not about “saving” other people—I am no better or worse than anyone else, and to be honest, the only one doing any saving around here is Jesus. Matthew 25:40 says “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” We have all been “the least of these” at one point or another. People are not defined by their circumstances--they have dignity and worth and deserve respect. I hope to encounter some of these beautiful people in New York City, and to offer whatever I can to make their days more bearable. That said, if you feel as if you could support this mission financially, absolutely any amount would be appreciated immensely. Thank you so much for the support, and God bless!
