About Me

I am a senior Biology major at Washington and Lee dedicated to environmental sustainability, collegiate basketball, and my faith. My ideal day includes reading Jane Austen with a mug of coffee, participating in numerous outdoor physical activities, and spending quality time with friends and family. A large part of who I am revolves around my volunteer work. No matter where my life takes me, I always want to incorporate some form of community service into my day-to-day life.

Future Plans

If I can raise enough money, I will attend the University of Cambridge (to which I have already been accepted) to pursue an MPhil in Biological Sciences for Zoology research. I will be working with Dr. David Aldridge on freshwater mussel conservation in two British waterways. After Cambridge, I plan to earn a Ph.D. in conservation ecology. Ultimately, I want to lead a research team focused on restoring ecosystems by re-establishing wildlife, nursing food webs back to health, and implementing sustainable land and water use techniques. This will require involving local people in our projects to ensure their understanding of the land and its maintenance. This type of restoration and education will help alleviate poverty by giving people access to fruitful land, healthy water, and knowledge about the environment's resources. Through the research of efficient, sustainable conservation efforts, I will be able to combine my love of wildlife with my desire to provide humans with environmental benefits. Eventually, I aspire to start a non-profit organization in which volunteers, especially high school and college students, spend weeks on conservation, restoration, and preservation projects aimed at creating better living environments for people and animals alike.

Marine Ecology Research at the University of Cambridge

I am so excited to have recently been accepted to the University of Cambridge where I will spend my gap year earning an MPhil in Zoology! This program will start October 1st, 2017, but the offer is conditional until I can prove that I have the means to fund myself for the year. I will be conducting research with Dr. David Aldridge on freshwater mussels (both native and invasive) living in two, main British waterways: the Thames and the Medway, and will be living at Churchill College within Cambridge. Our lab work will mainly take place in the David Attenborough Building, which not only has a new aquatic lab ideal for my research, but also fosters a community-centered atmosphere allowing graduate students and professors from conservation science and zoology to collaborate! You can learn more about my program and all of the details here - http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/blzompbsc
