Hello, my name is Diab Thor. Currently, I am a student at CSU, Chico. Since English was my second language, going to school was difficult. However, at a young age, I knew that education was the key to success. Since then, I had strived to reach for my goals. I'd overcame barriers such as ESL classes and being bullied for transferring from school to school. Growing up, life has its ups and downs, but eventually, I enrolled in honors and AP classes which led me to graduate high school within Top Ten of my graduating class. I am proud of the accomplishments I've made and the ones yet to come. read more

Study and Intern in Costa Rica

When I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to attend college that was nearby. I wanted to be able to assist and help my parents. I didn’t want to leave my family. Eventually, I realized that I must step out of my comfort zone in order to grow. Studying abroad will bolster my independence and I am ready to make this step. My name is Diab Thor and I am a pre-nursing student pursuing a major in Nutrition and Food Science (Option in Communication) with a minor in Spanish. I will be studying abroad in Costa Rica for the 2015-2016 academic year through the University Studies Abroad Consortium program. I chose Costa Rica because it provided many great opportunities for me such as interning at the hospital and volunteering at a local school. Because it is a Spanish-speaking country, studying in Costa Rica will increase my knowledge in their language and culture. Since Hmong is my primary language, it will be very beneficial to stand out as a trilingual nurse. I will be spending one semester in Heredia where I will be taking a fast track Spanish language course in addition to a Latin America dance class. After my semester in Heredia, I will use what I’ve learn and apply that knowledge to the hospital by interning in San Ramon. Splitting the semesters between the two places was the best choice for me, as it will help me learn the language faster so that I can better assists the locals in the hospital. As a student stated, “being a college student is expensive and studying abroad isn't much cheaper”. Despite money being the issue, I didn’t want to give up my dream of studying abroad. I applied and was blessed to receive the Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship. Currently, I am working at a warehouse for the summer so that I have money to support myself for the entire year of necessities and travel expenses. Unfortunately, the scholarship and my savings from the job is not enough to cover for the overall cost of the program. That is why I decided to seek help from GoEnnounce because the donations will go towards my total program fee that consists of: tuition abroad, school expenses, traveling, and homestay cost. I will be living with a host family while abroad and the homestay program itself is $1,970 per semester. I will greatly appreciate any donation no matter how big or small. Please help me reach for my dream by supporting this once in a lifetime educational experience. Feel free to learn more about me through my student page and follow my study abroad journey, as I will be updating my trip on this account. Thank you!
