Help Me: Brazil Study Abroad Research and Practice
Study Abroad
What I'm Fundraising For
I am fundraising to fund my study abroad to Brazil. I chose Brazil because of the public health challenges it has been facing recently; with Zika last year and this year Yellow Fever is on the rise. I am an MPH (Masters in Public Health) student at Georgia State University. My concentration is in Health Promotion in Behavior. I have a deep passion in promoting healthy lifestyles but I also love behavioral science and knowing why people do the things they do. I am currently a Health Fitness Specialist, I recieved my BS from GSU in Exercise Science and I love what I do, but I want to help those who aren't already taking charge of their health. This particular study abroad trip really interested me not only will I get to participate in research but most importantly practice. I never studied abroad during my undergraduate studies and it has been one of my deepest regrets but I have been blessed to have a second chance with my Master's program and I believe this experience will be even more valuable than had I done it at a younger age.
Why This Is Important To Me:
I am doing this because I want to be informed and exposed to current public health issues from a global perspective. I know the knowledge gained from this trip will be invaluable both academically and professionally. Health issues that affect others affect us therefore I believe that getting global exposure will help me better serve my community at large.
How I Will Use The Funds:
The fees support the program which include in-class instruction, weekly public health field trips in the city of Salvador, cross cultural lectures, and an applied research project as well as language instruction and homestays. The program will feature course work that focuses on understanding the similarities and differences between public health practices and collective health in the United States and Brazil. With the instruction of professors from Georgia State University, the Institiute of Collective Health at the Federal University of Bahia the approaches to public health research, critical thinking, and analytical tools that I will obtain will help me in my future courswork and career path.
